Terrible Vibration when its REALLY cold out.

2009 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  helo735
When its really cold out, talking below -30 Celcius our 2019 SE 4 cyl 4WD has a horrible vibration. Still runs and drives fine but when idling the whole car shakes. Improves slightly once its warmed up but never really goes away till the ambient air warms up to -20 or higher.

Have had it to the dealer twice. It thaws in their bay and by the time they look at it the issue is gone and they cant reproduce.

Anyone else experience this?

Good morning and welcome to the forum!

What's probably going to need to happen is that your car is going to need to sit at the shop overnight when you know it's going to be cold enough to duplicate the problem.

I can ask a guy at work, but what I suspect it happening is that the lower motor mount is hydraulic (fluid filled) and the oil inside of it has solidified when it's that cold. But I'll need to verify that they are hydraulic before I can say for sure.
It was confirmed by our parts guy that the lower mounts are rubber and hydraulic, and his guess was the same as mine: at -30c, the oil in that lower mount is probably close to frozen solid, causing the vibrations normally absorbed by the mount to be transmitted throughout the car. Once the dealer can duplicate the problem, they may throw on a new mount, but it might not fix the problem.

Wow, thank you so much! I can't believe I was able to get such a sensible answer like that from a forum when the dealer failed to give me anything of value twice...

That makes total sense to me.

Is there a diagram or pic of where this mount is located so I could check it out?

It's going to be on the lower right side of the v engine bay a little bit buried under the engine accessories (belts, alternator, etc). I'll see if I can turn up a diagram from work Monday.
