‘Time Bombs’: Ford EcoBoost Oil Pump Defect Can Cause Engine Failure While Driving, Class Action Says

From what I understand, the oil pump failures are due to the oil pumps seizing up because the oil pickup screen gets plugged with sludge because of not changing the oil at the correct intervals. Once the pump seizes up, the oil pump drive belt destroys itself. If the oil pump belt tensioner fails, that will cause the same issue as well. And once you don't have oil flow, say bye bye to your main & rod bearings...

Ford says you can go 10K miles on an oil change... I can't do that to a motor. I change mine faithfully every 5K with full synthetic oil and have yet to have an issue at all with the motor. And I am just over 75K miles on mine.

I have 84K on my 1.0 and other than oil changes every 5K, the engine has never been touched. And I purchased the car new, so all of the miles are from myself.

I bought a 2018 ford ecosport 1.0 an the oil pump and belt tensioner did cause catastrophic failure now I have no vehicle an still owe 19000 + on the vehicle.
Hey Jimmy I just experienced the same problem with no extended warranty. The engine is on backorder but I may have a little solution to help. I have a 2018 Ecosport. Email me at chooks1981@gmail.com.

My 2022 EcoSport has an engine system issue where is shuts off entirely while in Drive gear, with vehicles wheezing by because I am on the freeway. So this requires me to place gear in Park and restart engine. This is very dangerous! The dealership has inspected the vehicle because it is under warranty and found nothing. Has anyone had this issue? The dealership clearly sold me a lemon and I am currently looking at legal avenues.

Yes, mine done it and a simple software update corrected the issue. Mine was shutting off when making a left turn at low speed.

My car became inoperable just this last Friday. Oil pump fail. Ford is currently doing nothing about. No tow and not even a guarantee for reimbursement if I could actually afford this repair. (Estimate given was $9,000.) All they are saying is “sorry for inconvenience” and that they won’t start working on vehicles until 2nd quarter. Anyone have any advice or ideas on how to motivate them to move faster?? The closest dealership has refused service under the recall and won’t won’t even run a diagnostic on it for Ford until April. This is my only transportation. I can’t for Ford to eventually get to my car that they said was safe to continue driving. I need the thing fixed yesterday.

I remember a similar thing with the 1.6 put into the Fiesta ST. The head had a hot spot that would warp it when you shut it off. Their fix was to attach a gauge that would tell you when your coolant was low. The real fix happened in 2015, when they just redesigned the head to eliminate the hot spot. Luckily, my '17 has never had an issue.

I think CBr's dealer is not playing fair.

Reading some of these posts really makes me sad. I can't imagine being in such a position where you need a car and due to no fault of you own....you have one but can't use it.
Even when it's still under warranty, apparently it can take months to fix. Thats unacceptable.
I don't want to just bash Ford. I'm sure there are horror stories from just about any make.
I truly hope all of you are made whole from this lawsuit....and not just a free repair, but for loss of use.

Same here. Hundreds, if not thousands of people have had this happen to them. I'm not even on any other EcoSport groups or forums, and the tales I've heard...
Some had to take out a loan for a new engine. Others had to rent cars and bum rides just to get to work.

This is an incredible failure for Ford. They need to make it right.

I was driving when the Low Engine Oil Pressure alert came on the dash without the check engine light. The engine turned off minutes later after turning into a quick oil change garage so I was towed to the Ford dealer. Two weeks later I am told the oil pump was reading zero psi (not working) and therefore the engine seized and now needs to be replaced without even addressing the oil pump issue that caused the engine to seize. I had no warning or indication about any issue while driving. Also, a recall letter from Ford states how this vehicle's engine can stop running when driving. How is anyone supposed to know? I don't know what to do and I don't have the money needed for a new engine being $7,200 when I still owe $8,000. Any guidance will be gladly embraced. Thank you.

I currently have my 2018 Ecosport parked in my driveway as the engine is 'blown'. My local ford dealer will only replace the engine for $8500 (new engine). Then they will have Me seek reimbursement for the new engine when Ford Actually Has a fix for the oil pump issue. This fix is expected sometime after June. I was also informed that I would have to prove that I provided all oil changes and expected care for the engine. When asking further, it was clarified that Ford does Not have to reimburse if they feel I did not prove the cause of the damage was the recall. The tech at the dealership would Not say the oil pump was the cause - he diagnosed it as 'debris in the engine'.
I asked a lawyer and in my state I have no legal stance - so I'm seeking a used engine and an experienced mechanic.

My dad worked for 30 Ford years but I'm very disappointed and ford I'll never buy another for my 2019 ecosport broke down on West Virginia and I live in North Carolina I called the dealership where I live and they said have it towed to that area what good is that going to do me when I need my vehicle in North Carolina we knew about to recall we never got anything further in the mail about it well they're going to have to do something about it now it said low oil pressure and we just changed the oil a couple months ago so we had to pull off the road the next exit and let the car cool down but we still had to take the car further to advance Auto which was in that area and ravenswood West Virginia had to leave the car Ford needs to fix his problem if I have to have another engine I'm file for a lawsuit and the car was making a lot of noise in the engine and it never hurt it like that before it's always purr like a kitten for me I am going through enough with my father passing away I don't need this stress

As of today- it’s been two weeks and my daughter’s car is still sitting at a dealership. It’s been approved for a new engine however, she lives in a different state and she’s underage to rent ait’s been two weeks and my daughter’s car is still sitting at a dealership. It’s been approved for a new engine however she lives in a different state and she’s underage to rent a car so she has been stuck taking Ubers to a $15 an hour job every day, Ford has told me that they will reimburse and I’m supposed to save all my expenses but reading a lot of this. I doubt it and I am going to contact the class action suit. On a dark highway at 10:45 at night when the oil light came on then the engine light which required police and fire to show up. Ford has no plans for anybody who’s under the age to actually get a loaner vehicle and they are essentially stuck, especially if they live out of state like at a college campus where these cars are heavily used. I’m absolutely looking to share the story with media.. we bought the car 13 months earlier and only put 7000 miles on it and bought it direct from a Ford dealership who used it as a shop car which means it was well-maintained but now I’m beginning to question if they knew…

I took my 2019 Ford ecosport to the dealership bc of low oil pressure warning. After seeing on line that there was a recall for the problem I was having. Had to pay dealership $98 to do a check of systems. Dealership said my motor was not that bad and they wouldn't have (recall) parts to fix it as anyways till January 2025. When I asked what to do if the engine stopped working, they said call a tow truck and the dealership would try to bill ford for the tow. Ford and their dealerships Not very concerned about their customers safety. Not a satisfied customer and will never waist another dime on any Ford product.
