In an effort to meet small SUV demands, Ford has started producing the Euro-spec EcoSports at its assembly plant in Craiova, Romania.
While Ford’s factory in Chennai, India, is still rolling EcoSports down the assembly line, European demand has outstripped the plant’s production capacity. The shift from importing vehicles to producing them locally will increase model output and create around 1,700 new jobs.
“EcoSport is another example of how Ford is growing our business on our strengths – including world-class SUVs,” said Steven Armstrong, Ford group vice president and president, Europe Middle East and Africa. “With demand growing for EcoSport, and compact SUVs in general, now is the right time to localize production in Europe to meet our customers’ needs.”
Perhaps Ford is increasing production output at the Craiova assembly plant in preparation for future sales increase of SUVs and crossovers, a segment that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. CarScoops reported a 30 percent increase of Ford SUV sales in Europe last year and by 27 percent in the first eight months of 2017.
The €200 million investment in Craiova will help Ford produce enough EcoSports to meet the demands of 56 markets including Europe, UK, New Caledonia in Oceania, Turkmenistan and South Africa.
